3. After all the books have been scanned, the associate will make you an offer. A cash price will be quoted as well as a credit price at most stores. I always take the credit because the credit amount is significantly larger. When accepting the credit, the associate will ask if you’d like that on your account or on a card. I request the card. That way the card can be used at any Hastings and on-line as well. If you are looking to make cash though, then definitely take the cash if you want to make money selling books.
Note that postage can be pricey, meaning that it's possible to make very little income using sites like Amazon and eBay to sell your books. That's where newer sites like WeBuyBooks.co.uk and Fatbrain are a bit more transparent – they cover the postage costs, so the valuation they give you should be exactly the amount you'll see in your bank account (unless they decide your books aren't in good enough nick when they arrive)
Selling used books online also means that you have to maintain a physical stock of the books, while also shipping those out as sales are made. There is a fair amount of logistics involved in doing this, along with the physical space to store the books. Sure, if you score a few rarities you can put them in your closet. If you start buying in bulk, you may need a storage unit.

Auction sites online and auction houses are also worth checking out for second-hand books. House clearances can be a good source of book collections. Often relatives of the deceased just want to clear the house with as little hassle as possible. If you have transport you may be able to be paid by executors to take hundreds of books away for dumping, and retrieve a couple of gems from the dross.
The way you describe your books online is crucially important to a successful sale. Photographs as well as words can help a potential buyer understand exactly what you are selling. They need to know not just the title and date of publication of the book, but also a detailed description of its condition. This is especially important for higher value items.
3.) Prepared a shipment. Once I had scanned all my items and had them in a box, I started going through the process of setting up the shipment through the app. I ended up filling the box with mostly books and a few old Xbox games that my kids don't play anymore. Once shipment was prepared, they sent me this welcome email immediately along with a free prepaid shipping label! (You do this all through the app, it's super easy).
I am thrilled with your information and the help of your commenters. They all provided lots of help to sell my book collection. I have alot of research books, mainly Native American/Cherokee books and Vampire books and have decided to stop carting them around even though I love them. I am excited with the information provided here and will check them out.

You see, what the big publishing houses do with big offices of editors, writers, administrative staff… and then big printing presses… then distribution centers to get their books out to bookstores around the country… all to hopefully get books in the hands of customers… you can do on the computer you have right now. If that’s not massive disruption, I don’t know what is.

Assuming you have located some comparable books on these sites, if the prices quoted are for the most part $15 to $20 or more, there's a good chance you may be able to realize $10 or more by listing your item on eBay. If the prices are lower than this, chances are you've got a dog. Another rule of thumb: in my experience, it simply isn't worth the trouble to list a book that sells for less than $10.

Search by ISBN: The ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is a unique number located on the back of your book that identifies the particular title, author, and edition of a book. Some books have 10-digit ISBNs, others have 13 digits. Searching by ISBN ensures that you will be quoted the correct buyback prices on the exact book and edition you are selling.

All things considered, this is the best method of selling books, which I no longer recommend, because the costs for doing business are too high to make a profit. So you run around burning up a tank of gas, trying to source a couple good books, and yeah, they have to be in very good/ to excellent condition, or they aren’t competitive. Then those fees will kill you! With the FBA program, you also have to pay to ship the books to Amazon, and those costs have also gone up. Yes, books are heavy, and

College kids are terrible planners and tend to buy their textbooks at the last minute. For this reason, they’ll usually pay 20%+ more to have a book ship 2-3 days Prime versus waiting 10+ days for media mail. So that means you can buy books which are FBM (and tend to ship media mail) and turn around and resell them Prime at a higher price. I kept a list of 10-20 textbooks I could do this with. The returns are better than the stock market!
Who’s buying? Richard Davies, PR manager for the popular online marketplace Abebooks, describes the customer base as rather broad. “There are people who just want a cheap book,” he says, “and the used book market fulfills that really well.” Others, meanwhile, have more idiosyncratic requirements. “The book they need is not going to be in a Barnes & Noble.” So they turn to online retailers, where the “breadth of inventory really caters to people who have got a demanding taste”.
Selling Used Books Online?” The answer to that is you used to be able to make very good money doing that. Not any more. First, everybody and their 5 favorite Aunts all think they can make a good living doing it, so the competition is seriously overwhelming! Often, you can find pages and pages of the same book for sale online at multiple sites, all in the same very good condition , so it’s very competitive. There is a market for specialized current edition textbooks, but that market has become saturated. Both Ebay and Amazon have raised their rates at least twice this year, and if you sell used books on Amazon, you’ll be paying close to 40% of your proceeds to them. Ebay was a hair less, last time I compared, but they have more fees. That’s more than enough to wipe out your profits, so you end up with a net loss! The profit margins have become razor thin, and many complain about losing money. If you send books to Amazon for their FBA program, and the books don’t sell in a timely fashion, you’ll be paying rent to Amazon to store them or pay to have them destroyed. That’s not good!
This is one of the easiest ways to sell your e-books online. You can set up an affiliate program for interested bloggers, writers or anyone that want to promote your e-books. You will pay them an agreed amount of money for each sale brought about by their marketing effort. Go through Click2Sale and provide each person with your affiliate link
Thank you for the helpful tips. My husband passed away last year and he was an avid reader. I have a few hundred books to sell with a mixture of paperback and hardback. They are in great condition except he always threw away the dust covers as he hated them. He mostly read sci fi, alternate history, and military related titles. Do you think that selling them on Amazon and using the FBA method would be my best bet?
If you decide you want to sell your used book, just click on the sell button next to the vendor and you’re all set.  You will be emailed a shipping label and then all you have to do is ship the book within 7 days.  Oh btw, shipping is free.  Normally if you were to ship book with USPS, it would cost around $5-6 dollars.  That would make no sense at all if the book’s value is only a few bucks.  But with BookScouter, shipping is free so that’s one less thing to worry about.
Powell’s: They buy mostly mainstream books, not the technical or educational types. As mentioned above, they do have a very strict acceptance policy. The only writing they will accept is a name written in the front of the book – not even “to my favorite daughter, hope you enjoy this book as much as I did, love mom.” Absolutely no highlighting or underlining.
“I think the impact of people not having access to books or being able to enjoy books is huge,” Mullen says. That enthusiasm for reading is common among all of the used book sellers I spoke with. I don’t suppose it would be possible to devote so much effort to rescuing literature from oblivion without some affection for what’s being saved. “We want people to read,” Mike Ward says. “It doesn’t matter how you read or how you get your books. It just matters that you read.”
The big benefit to working through Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing, even though they charge you a commission on your sales, is their reach. Around 89 million Americans are said to be active ebook readers. That’s your potential audience, all those people visiting this site and browsing for a new book. It could be your book they find when doing a search on a related keyword. In fact, 38 percent of daily sales of ebooks on Amazon go to self-published titles.

To make this type of business pay you need specialist knowledge. This could be knowing which editions are collectable, or having useful contacts in the antique or vintage trade. Getting the right books to sell and matching them to waiting customers is the key to success. You may find that this "homebased" business actually involves a lot of travel outside the home (to auction sales and the like).
Most of you may already know how to check completed listings on eBay; however, if not, its pretty simple.  There is an option on the left sidebar that says “Completed Listing”.  Simply check this box, and then only the listings for the particular search topic you have entered that are completed will show.  By doing this kind of research, you can find out pretty quickly how much you can expect to sell a book for.
