When I first started my business, I thought that the best strategy would be to capitalise on what is popular at that particular time. So, for example, when The Hunger Games movie was released, I could quite happily piggy-back on the huge advertising budgets of the film industry and sell The Hunger Game books, without doing any advertising myself, through searches on Amazon. This strategy didn't work. But it wasn't because I had wrongly predicted demand, The Hunger Games book series was flying of Amazon's virtual shelves, the strategy didn't work because I encountered "Mega Sellers". If you've ever dug a little into book sellers on Amazon, you'll find that there are a handful of sellers who each seem to have all but the most obscure used books stocked in their warehouses. They are the ones who have sold over 20,000 books on Amazon. But there's an easier way to identify a Mega Seller than their sales numbers, it's their pricing. Every single book that I wanted to sell is stocked by them, and they are all priced at £0.01. That's right, a penny!
The price point is partly a result of the market’s downward pressure: at a certain level of supply and demand the race to the lowest price swiftly plummets to the bottom. What remains inflexible is the $3.99 fee Amazon charges the buyer for shipping. From that $4, Amazon takes what they call a “variable closing fee” of $1.35. They also charge the seller 15% of the item’s price – which in the case of a penny book is zero. That leaves $2.64 to cover postage, acquisition cost and overhead.

Be wary that when sending your books in to sites that will then give you a valuation before reselling, you have no control over how the books will be handled during postage. We have read some angry reviews from users claiming that their valuation was reduced substantially due to water damage that wasn't there when they posted it! Take lots of pics to show the condition of your books before you post them!

The previous problem had been that I found Royal Mail postage prices very complicated and confusing. They consider a combination of size, weight, insurance, destination and the boundaries from price level to price level are pretty well hidden. If the post clerk hadn't informed me that one of my packages was classed as a Medium Parcel, and if I simply cut down one side by 5mm, it would be a Small Parcel and I would save £2.50, then I would have been forever losing out and diminishing my margins for no reason.
Though this may seem woefully unreliable at first, the most important tool you have for identifying a saleable book is your nose, or instinct. Wherever you are - at a sale, in a thrift shop, a used bookstore, etc., - trust your nose. If you see something that catches your eye, it may well catch the eye of a buyer as well. A good rule of thumb is: if you pick up a book, look at it, put it back, and then at some later point pick it up again, it's time to buy it. It's caught your eye twice. There's something about it, perhaps as yet indefinable, that could produce a sale.

Take a book, plug in the ISBN number to a couple of scouting sites, and label the book with the best prices on a sticky note before you make your final counts. These scouting sites might direct you to sell your books with dealers, such as ValoreBooks, TextbookRush, and Chegg. Most of these sites are hit or miss depending on the book. Also, scouting sites can be unreliable, so check the actual buyer sites to confirm their rates.
I felt like saying: Hey, do you mind if someone else sees those books too. But of course he was in a frenzy and didn’t even notice me standing there. Discouraged from this new idea I just learned about, I went ahead on to the one on the other side of town. When I stepped in the door I went over to the books shelves and there was another guy with a cart and a scanner connected to his phone just scanning the books one by one in a speed method, occasionally throwing one here and there into the cart. It was enough for me, I’ll stick to other methods and products.
The key to success in buying and selling used books online is to know how much money you can sell the book for before you buy it.  Even though you could buy books all day long at $1 a pop at most thrift stores; doesn’t mean you should.  You should only purchase a book if you know you can make some money on it.  I usually only bought a book for a $1 if I knew I could sell it for $5 or more.
