Try to find out what a particular book has sold for recently. Amazon doesn't display completed sales, but you can search eBay for closing prices on completed auctions. There are also other websites that may give an indication of market value, for example, Abe books, Alibris, and Book finder. The video below describes recent changes to Amazon's charging structure. These could affect the viability of small volume online booksellers.
You see, what the big publishing houses do with big offices of editors, writers, administrative staff… and then big printing presses… then distribution centers to get their books out to bookstores around the country… all to hopefully get books in the hands of customers… you can do on the computer you have right now. If that’s not massive disruption, I don’t know what is.
Dave, this is an odd one. I’ve just self published a new printed book — high quality: hardback, dust jacket, good paper, 20 pages of glossy photo’s, etc. It’s non-fiction and history/religious utopian commune/19th century/pretty crazy. Was thinking of selling it for $35, mostly through bookstores, but also on Amazon. Would FBM be the place to start? Excellent blog, by the way — and remarkable for your responses!
These sites and several others like them are a compilation of thousands of book dealers' listings. They can give you a rough idea of typical market prices for most books in circulation. I won't go into specifics now, but in general, you'll need to match up the specific copyright dates and publisher for an accurate comparison. Also, condition can make a huge difference, not to mention the presence of a dust jacket. Read the descriptions carefully.
The previous problem had been that I found Royal Mail postage prices very complicated and confusing. They consider a combination of size, weight, insurance, destination and the boundaries from price level to price level are pretty well hidden. If the post clerk hadn't informed me that one of my packages was classed as a Medium Parcel, and if I simply cut down one side by 5mm, it would be a Small Parcel and I would save £2.50, then I would have been forever losing out and diminishing my margins for no reason.
When I first started my business, I thought that the best strategy would be to capitalise on what is popular at that particular time. So, for example, when The Hunger Games movie was released, I could quite happily piggy-back on the huge advertising budgets of the film industry and sell The Hunger Game books, without doing any advertising myself, through searches on Amazon. This strategy didn't work. But it wasn't because I had wrongly predicted demand, The Hunger Games book series was flying of Amazon's virtual shelves, the strategy didn't work because I encountered "Mega Sellers". If you've ever dug a little into book sellers on Amazon, you'll find that there are a handful of sellers who each seem to have all but the most obscure used books stocked in their warehouses. They are the ones who have sold over 20,000 books on Amazon. But there's an easier way to identify a Mega Seller than their sales numbers, it's their pricing. Every single book that I wanted to sell is stocked by them, and they are all priced at £0.01. That's right, a penny!
From what I have understood from looking through Amazon and looking at BSR for the first time ( thanks 2 U) i ca see most of these books are between 300,000 and 10,000 BSR. I suppose they are all worth a sell but on average they sell for about £3. What can you suggest , looking at time limitations/ and end sale? Please advice the best way forwards, UK based thanks mate.
Without a decent description you’re unlikely to sell a book. As far as eBay goes, you should include an image of the book, its synopsis (the blurb on the back cover) and statements concerning the condition of the book. Highlight rips or tears, dog ears (those top-corner bends to mark a page in the absence of a bookmark), and scrawlings or other markings, loose or broken bindings, any creases in the bindings, and creases on the front or back of a paperback book.
Self-published authors have had big success in recent years. Take Hugh Howey, who sold a series of science fiction books through Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing. At one point, he was selling 20,000 — 30,000 copies a month, which generated $150,000 in income monthly. Amanda Hocking, who writes “paranormal romance” and fantasy novels, has sold well more than a million books on Amazon, generating over $2 million in sales. That's proof that you can make money self-publishing on Amazon.
I check the selling price of Go Set a Watchman, a hardcover book I paid full price for, but one that I honestly never want to see on my shelves again. BookScouter says that one (just one) of the websites they scan will buy my copy for $0.12. Harsh. I didn’t like it either, guys, but that’s like $0.25 less than what it probably cost to print the dang book. My paperback of To Kill a Mockingbird, on the other hand, will go to three different sites for as much as $0.75.
